Tennis video analysis: how to improve your technique with AI

Video analysis is the most powerful tool to improve your tennis. But watching a video and understanding what to fix are two different things. AI helps you see what the human eye misses, and turn data into concrete actions.

What the AI sees that you don't

When you watch your video, you see the result: the ball goes in or out. The AI sees the process: how you get to impact, where you hit the ball, how your body moves. Here's what it analyzes for each shot:

  • Grip: how you hold the racket, and whether it changes during the swing
  • Swing path: the racket's trajectory, from start to finish
  • Impact point: where you hit the ball relative to your body
  • Spin: how much rotation you generate, and in which direction
  • Follow-through: how the motion ends, and whether it's complete
  • Patterns: whether you repeat the same mistake every time

The serve: the hardest shot to analyze

The serve is the fastest and most complex shot. In less than a second, the arm goes from the trophy position to impact. The human eye can't capture everything. The AI can.

For the serve, the footage must be a three-quarter side angle, closer in (3-4 metres). From behind, the motion leaves the frame at the crucial moment. With the right angle, the AI sees: the toss, the trophy position, the impact point, and the follow-through.

The key lesson: a wide angle from behind works for forehand, backhand and volley. For the serve you need a three-quarter side angle, closer in. Otherwise the AI can't see the moment of impact.

From data to action: the RacketFit report

The AI analysis doesn't stop at the "what". It also tells you the "how". The report includes:

  • Technical profile: your strengths and areas for improvement for each shot
  • Setup assessment: plausible matches and limitations to verify on court
  • Concrete options: 2-3 recommended setups, with links to buy them
  • Test protocol: how to try the new setup on court and what to look for

Limits of the analysis

RacketFit can describe visible postures and sequences in a video. It does not measure spin, speed, impact forces or shoulder load, and it cannot diagnose the cause of pain. Stop playing and consult a doctor or physiotherapist if discomfort persists.

How to prepare your videos for analysis

  1. Position the phone: horizontal, stable (resting on something or on a tripod)
  2. Forehand, backhand, volley: from behind the baseline, chest height, whole court in frame
  3. Serve: three-quarter side angle, 3-4 metres, arm and racket always in frame
  4. Duration: 30-60 seconds per shot, rallies in motion
  5. Format: MP4 or MOV, max 500MB per video

Frequently asked questions

What can you see in an AI tennis video analysis?

The AI analyzes grip, swing path, impact point, spin, follow-through, and movement patterns. For each shot it builds a technical profile with strengths and areas for improvement.

Do I need a professional camera for video analysis?

No, a smartphone is enough. What matters is the position: horizontal, stable, and with the right angle for each shot. For the serve you need a three-quarter side angle.

How long does an AI video analysis take?

The automated analysis takes a few minutes. The report with a setup review and personalised options arrives by email after the videos are processed.
