Tennis string tension: the guide for amateur players

String tension is one of the parameters that influence setup response. The value must be considered together with material, gauge, frame, machine and stringing technique. The same tension can therefore feel different across rackets and strings.

The fundamental trade-off

Every tension is a compromise between three factors:

  • Perceived trajectory: changing tension can alter launch angle and stringbed response
  • Depth: some players obtain more depth at lower tension, but the result depends on the full setup
  • Perceived comfort: lower tension can make the stringbed less stiff, without supporting medical conclusions

There is no single best tension. Start within the frame manufacturer's range and compare small changes with a qualified stringer.

The tension ranges

TensionEffectWho it's for
20-22 kgPotentially more elastic response, depending on string and frameOnly when compatible with the frame range and selected string
22-24 kgA common trial range on several adult framesA starting point to test, not a universal prescription
24-26 kgPotentially stiffer stringbed responseAssess with a stringer and stay within manufacturer limits
26+ kgA high value for many modern setupsDo not copy it without a specific technical reason

Tension loss over time

Strings do not stay at their initial tension. Behaviour varies substantially between materials and constructions:

  • After stringing: settling begins even without play
  • With use: impacts, temperature and time progressively alter response
  • Across different strings: products can lose tension and playability at very different rates

Avoid this shortcut: do not automatically add 2-3 kg to compensate for future tension loss. Use the reference tension agreed with your stringer, then record feel and playing hours before the next test.

How to choose the right tension

1. Consider your game style

Swing speed, trajectories and perceived control help form a hypothesis, but do not determine a number on their own. Start conservatively within the frame range and change one variable at a time.

2. Consider your level

Playing level alone cannot prescribe tension. A beginner and a competitor can use different materials, frames and tensions for valid reasons. The complete system matters more than the player's label.

3. Consider your arm

If you feel elbow or shoulder pain, stop playing and seek assessment from a doctor or physiotherapist. Changing tension or string is not treatment. When you are cleared to return, review the setup with a qualified stringer.

4. Consider the racket

Always consult the manufacturer's range. Profile, stiffness, string pattern and head size affect the result, so there is no automatic compensation based on the frame's marketing category.

The myth of "pro-level" tension

A professional's tension depends on frame, string, conditions and personal preference. Copying that number without reproducing the rest of the setup does not guarantee the same result and may create an unsuitable stringbed.

The right tension is the one that makes you play better, not the one your idol uses.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I restring my racket?

There is no universal interval. Material, gauge, string pattern, playing intensity and personal preferences all affect useful life. Discuss breakage, loss of control, comfort changes and abnormal string movement with a qualified stringer.

What does tension in kg mean?

Reference tension is the value set on the stringing machine. Its effect also depends on the string, gauge, frame, machine and stringing technique, so the same number does not produce the same response in every setup.

Do strings lose tension even without playing?

Yes. All strings lose tension after stringing, but the rate and amount vary substantially with material, construction, gauge, temperature and use. A single percentage cannot be applied to every setup.
